How to create a Linktree style links page with GeneratePress Premium

I see a lot of people using Linktree & other services to create a ‘special’ & ‘pretty’ page of buttons instead of just linking to their homepage. It is a sensible idea to provide a mobile optimized set of links, especially if you have a specific link you want to direct people to from your latest post. But with the advent of WordPress’s block editor (aka Gutenberg), anyone with a WordPress website can easily make their own page. It may not look as pretty as Linktree or Milkshake but it could if you want to put some time into it. … Continue reading

#2: Finding community

I was going to wait and write the next newsletter in two weeks – except I actually looked forward to writing this morning. Usually writing a blog post is a big to do. I have a specific topic in mind, which tends to involve research. It has to be well-written and well-organized (writing is a kung fu skill of mine). And some of the writing lessons drilled into my head in my freshman high school English class (introduction, arguments, substantiation, conclusion) rear their heads and make sure that I don’t half-ass it. Thanks Mr. Reidy – I learned maybe 3 … Continue reading

#1: Dan Harmon, Kyle Starks, & other stuff

I’ve decided to give an honest go of blogging/newslettering – which means I’m going to write a regular blog post that gets sent out to my newsletter subscribers and gets posted to my blog. Except my newsletter subscribers are cooler so they get to read this first (if you’re reading this on my website then my newsletter subscribers read it 5 days ago, nyah nyah nyah). I’m not sure whether regular means weekly or biweekly, but pondering the past week on a Saturday morning seems like a really good time to write a blog post – basically whatever’s been on … Continue reading

How to start a newsletter with Mailchimp & WordPress

Every creative entrepreneur needs a mailing list, unless you have a particularly good deal involving carrier pigeons. It’s the most personal and cost effective way to build a relationship with your fans. Marketing doesn’t have to be skeevy; sending emails is the best way to have a one-on-one interaction without invasive advertising. We’re going to use Mailchimp because it’s free plan is way more than enough for creatives to get started. Mailchimp also has outstanding documentation and there are tutorials up the wazoo online. This post is going to go over: How to create a Mailchimp account How to create … Continue reading

Pilu Of The Woods

Pilu of the Woods

I wanted to read Pilu of the Woods from the second I saw the cover. It’s got a lovely, analog, earthiness to it. And the book as a whole did not disappoint – every inch of it is nothing short of gorgeous. And the story is so touching – especially if you have no idea what it’s about. Willow loves the woods near her house. They’re calm and quiet, so different from her own turbulent emotions, which she keeps locked away. When her emotions get the better of her one day, she decides to run away into the woods. There, … Continue reading

This Was Our Pact Review

This Was Our Pact

I just received & read this book (in one sitting, of course) on Saturday. And I have not been able to get it out of my mind since. Speaking of my mind, it exploded repeatedly while reading the book – one that I bought on slighty more than a whim. Last week was one of those weeks where one thing kept popping up over & over, which is usually the universe’s way of getting your attention. The book popped up on Instagram, and in discussions with my peers at Kids Comics United (<– a kickass social network for peeps who … Continue reading

using Tweetdeck

Twittering for creators: using Tweetdeck to build your career

PS I did a find/replace on the page so every instance of the T-word was replaced with Mastodon. Nothing in the screenshots exists in the Fediverse, and eventually I will update this for Mastodon. I’ve been on Mastodon for 13 years, or so Mastodon informed me recently. I’m surprised it’s still here; there were so many attempts at social media that came & went in the early days. Anyone remember FriendFeed or Twibes? All they were was just dust in the wind, dude. Note: feel free to skip ahead to the headlined sections. Today I’m not focused on copywriting and I’m … Continue reading

Crowded comic review

Crowded

I dig speculative fiction, ever since my child mind got blown by the 1968 Planet of the Apes – especially the ending. I’m a particular fan of real life being extrapolated into the future – kinda like how we’re living through Idiocracy right now. Remember the old Marvel What If series and DC’s Elseworlds? I ate all that up. Crowded is a story set in the near future where the gig economy and publicly social, app-directed lives have taken over. Imagine a world where any job is a gig AND there’s an app for it. That’s the Crowded universe in … Continue reading

Murder Falcon

Murder Falcon

I often run into stories that make me think I wish I’d thought of it. Sometimes these are simple twists or changes to tropes that are stunningly obvious; sometimes they’re clever concepts or conceits. A story like Wayward, which is a great example of traditional myth in modern times, one of those the myths are still true stories like Grimm that’s an automatic like for me. Or stories like Pacific Rim (a great kaiju film) or 30 Days of Night (a neat wrinkle on the vampire genre). But every so often I come across something special, something unique, that I … Continue reading
