Comedian Russell Peters denied entrance to India for not being Indian enough

Comedian Russell Peters denied entrance to India for not being Indian enough

NEW DELHI, INDIA – Successful stand-up comedian Russell Peters was denied entrance to India for not being Indian enough. This was in strict pursuance of the Bureau of Immigration’s new policy on what makes someone Indian enough. Said the sponsor of the legislation, Vikram Lollipopwala (BJP), “We have had our eye on Mr. Peters for many years. Many people learn what it is to be Indian from him – but he has been spreading false truths. We decided that there should be strict standards on what makes someone Indian enough. And these standards will apply to anyone trying to enter … Continue reading

A peak at my ever-evolving #comics #webcomics #process…

I was unhappy with the thumbnails (aka the rough sketch of a complete page). So I opened up the thumbnails in Clip Paint Studio (the app formerly known as Manga Studio) and Mischief.Mischief has a neat Window Opacity feature where you can use it while seeing everything that’s beneath it. I saw all of the elements in the page I wanted to fix without having to flip back & forth between two programs – cool! Mischief is quickly becoming my go to app for sketching & ideation. The infinite canvas, near infinite zooming & being able to navigate everything using … Continue reading

learn Hindi

Can you learn Hindi – with a font?

I don’t know how to read either Bengali or Hindi. My grandmother started teaching me Bengali once when I was a kid; I had a rudimentary knowledge of the letters and numbers for a few months. And that was it – by the time we returned the next year I’d lost interest. All I know now about Bengali letters is that the number 0 (zero) is the same in both Bengali and English; and what looks like an Bengali 8 (eight) is an English 4 (and I may be totally wrong about the latter). To learn Hindi or Bengali now is truly daunting. … Continue reading

So I started teaching improv comedy to kids…

My foray into improv comedy at the Tampa Bay Comic Con has been quite the unexpected detour. I enjoyed it so much that I joined a couple of meetups to scratch the itch. And it was so much fun that I knew kids would love it – so I started teaching at our homeschool co-op. Years back I used to watch Whole Line Is it Anyway and not once did it cross my mind that I could do that too. It’s bizarre looking back at the passive mindset I had. At some point, I lost curiosity. It returned after I … Continue reading

Aziz Ansari in India

Aziz Ansari Goes to India

I just finished watching Parks & Recreation last week (boo hoo :() and developed a much greater appreciation for Aziz Ansari over the last few months. The guy is effortlessly funny and entertaining as hell. He just wrote a short article in the New York Times about going back to India for a family wedding that’s worth a quick read: I relate to my cousins in wildly different ways. We all get along well, but it’s easier to connect with some more than with others. Three of them grew up in the States; four were born in India, but later moved to New … Continue reading

Changing the comic format…

After some feedback & consideration I’m switching the format of the comic from a strip to a page. I originally conceived the comic as being a daily strip with a lot of short, self-contained stories – very different from what the comic is at the moment. It will be better served as full page comic (more like a graphic novel), with the downside being less frequent updates. Creating as a page will make a big difference as I won’ be limited to 3-4 panels. Each page will be part of a story arc, of not a story unto its own. … Continue reading

“India in a Day” – a crowdsourced film by Google

I came across this recently and it’s a really cool idea. A crowdsourced, user-generated film all on one day – October 15, 2015: India in a Day is a user-generated film all about India, shot in a single day, by you. On Saturday 10th October 2015, you will have 24 hours to capture your story on camera and show us how India is changing. The most compelling and distinctive footage will be edited into a documentary film, executive produced by Ridley Scott and Anurag Kashyap and directed by Richie Mehta. They released a sneak peak video that’s pretty cool: I’m … Continue reading

Clyde Waddell’s amazing photos: A Yank’s Memories of Calcutta

I’ve devoted a lot of time in the strip so far to research, trying to figure out how people dressed back in the 1940s, taking a look at streets & vehicles, etc. Whilst Googling, I came across these fantastic pictures by Clyde Waddell, an American military photographer who was in Calcutta around 1945-1946. He took pictures, at the behest of his friends, and added some fantastic commentary. Click on a photo to open up a nice carousel viewer. This work is in the public domain in the United States because it is a work prepared by an officer or employee … Continue reading

Contemplating things at the end of the year…

I’ve loathed New Year’s Resolutions for years. People should be taking stock and reviewing their lives regularly; doing it once a year is not enough. But I have to admit that the end of the year, with the holidays and Workus Interruptus, is a good to time to stop & consider things deeply. And consider I have. Despite the last few months being some of the best ever for my website development business, I’ve never felt less satisfied. It’s easy to push feelings aside with the busy-ness of work & deadlines. But with time to think & ponder, things start to … Continue reading
