Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. Mike Tyson

#21: Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face

Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. Mike Tyson This should be an evergreen quote in my repertoire of quotes. Almost at the level of Life finds a way. (I assume by this point in time that everybody knows that quote, except for toddlers.) But creators knows what Mike is talking about: everybody has a plan until adversity smacks you upside the head. Being stymied by lack of time, lack of energy, creative blocks, fear, doubt, judgement – you name it. All punches to the face that creators are well acquainted with. Some of them can … Continue reading

Black Metal not if you still need to ask

#19: Wisdom from comics

This week I ponder the wisdom we receive from the stories we love. /// You can run all your life and not go anywhere. Mike For years, Social Distortion’s Ball & Chain has been a favorite song of mine. I was home from college in the summer of ‘92. And one night a friend wanted me to join him to see some bands I’d never heard of, in a venue that I’d never been to: the venerable Toad’s Place in New Haven. He was always into new music and new bands, but I was suspicious of his taste in music. … Continue reading

#16: Process, ego & revealing my next project

Welcome to the new shorter version of the newsletter! (Editor: NOT.) First, some good news! I have been honored with a BIPOC scholarship by the Center for Cartoon Studies! Brian McDonald I’m still grooving to Brian McDonald’s podcast, You Are A Storyteller (though I’ve … Continue reading

#14: My latest comic & Patreon wannabes

A link to my latest comic, thoughts on every platform turning into Patreon, and 3 reading recommendations. /// A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people. Thomas Mann I forgot where I got this but I am so feeling it this week. I haven’t made a lot of progress on my myth story outline re-write. There’s something wrong with the story that I can’t quite place (that’s usually the case with anything that seems like ‘writer’s block’). On the plus, I FINALLY finished the 5 page dry run of the graphic memoir, … Continue reading

Favorite movies Raiders of the Lost Ark

#13: Favorite movies

Coloring comics & movie movies movies! /// If I’m going to sing like someone else, then I don’t need to sing at all. Billie Holiday I heard this fine bit of wisdom from Brian McDonald’s excellent podcast, You Are A Storyteller. I tried to editorialize on it (I’ve written & deleted several paragraphs so far) but it speaks for itself. /// What I’m working on It’s been nearly 2 weeks since I stopped taking allergy meds, and after being waylaid last week by post 2nd dose side effects, this was my most productive week in well over a month. I … Continue reading
