Tampa, FL – Amar Bhalla is an avid bicyclist who pretends he’s Amitabh from an old Bollywood movie whenever he’s riding his bike. Unitl now, his wife was unaware and wondered why he cycled so erratically.
“Man, I loved Amitabh when I was a kid,” said Mr. Bhalla. “My parents took me to see Sholay in the theater when I was 3. I’ve seen every movie of his and watched the good ones over & over again. And ever since I could ride a bike, I’ve pretended that I’m Amitabh in Muqaddar Ka Sikkandar – you know, Rote Hue and all that. I weave back and forth. I hum the melody. If no one else is around I sing the song too.”
“I wore the tape out rewinding and watching that scene repeatedly,” continued Mr. Bhalla. “He’s weaving back and forth – in traffic. And he’s wearing an incredible two-tone outfit that was only possible in 1970s Bollywood. The next time I go back to India, I’m having that outfit tailored for me. I wish I’d thought of that for my wedding.”
“And the song was sung by another all-time favorite, Kishore Kumar. He was the Voice of Amitabh for songs back then. There’s not a single great baritone singer like him in Bollywood now. These days all the male singers sound like Asha Bhosle on steroids.”
“But my real dream is to own a motorcycle with a sidecar and pretend I’m in Sholay. But first I need to find my Dharmendra.”
When his wife noted that she would be happy to play Dharmendra’s role, Mr. Bhalla said he’d already decided that she could play Gabbar Singh. Mr. Bhalla has not been heard from since.
